Otolith Necklace – telling the Cods’ tales. A friend came by my work/shop in Henningsvær to give me a profound little piece from the ocean. It’s a small piece inside the cods ear called an Otolith. The “earstone” of the Cod fish is a hard, calcium carbonate structure located directly behind the brain. It helps detect sound and the hearing of course, but what is really exciting is that researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research have been able to read age, growth, travel patterns amongst other important information. It’s just amazing – kind of how you can count the annual rings on trees. Are you interested in reading more about this, click this link to an article by the Norwegian Havforskningsinstituttet. Statoconium, Otoconium or Statolith – keep the balance.
Measures about 20 x 10 mm without the eyelet and comes on a 50 cm silver anchor chain. Choose between solid 925 sterling silver or with a 14K gold plating on it.
